Tjörn, the Icelandic word for pond, is a minimalist coffee table inspired by the beauty of nature. The name comes from the table’s soft, pond-like shape. The brief was a statement piece for a hotel lobby in Reykjavik, Iceland.
The base is two identical pieces of wood, one flipped opposite the other, with curves taken from a natural tree branch. Together they cross to hold up the glass top. The form looks like it could tip, but it is stable.
The table was meant to flat pack, like much Scandinavian furniture, so it is easy to store and ship. The project moved from sketches of top shapes and leg profiles to a technical drawing, a full-size mockup, and the finished table: 58 in long, 28 in wide and 16 in tall, with a 0.5 in glass top.
